As a rule of France, 'Appellation d'origine controlee' wines are named either after their growing or after their variety, but the name Muscadet is an exception. It refers to a characteristic of the wine produced by the melon grape variety: vin qui a un goud musque - 'wine with a musk-like taste. Muscadet pairs well with seafood dishes including lobster, shrimp, mullet and particularly oysters.
